Plant Hormones at Work

Just like us when we talk to people around us, the cells that make up the bodies of plants and animals communicate with other cells that surround them. The words that they use to do this are small molecules called hormones. At the School of Science, we are constantly searching for and repeatedly finding novel hormones that are produced in the bodies of plants.

Left: The roots of plants are protected by a waterproof barrier that prevents unwanted ions from entering. The induction of this waterproof barrier  which is known as the “Casparian strip” by the hormone CIF. You can see the fragments connect and form a continuous structure.

Right: Growth at the tip of the root is a balanced combination of cell division and cell growth that results in a regular array of cells. The effect of administering the hormone RGF which controls this process. You can see an increase in the number of dividing cells (light blue).
