Did you know Nagoya University has an Issac Newton’s apple tree? In 1964, Sir Gordon Sutherland of Cambridge University sent seedling of offspring of a Newton’s tree as a gift of honor to Professor Yuji Shibata, the director of Japan Academy and the first Dean (1942-1948) of School of Science, Nagoya University. It has been planted in Koishikawa Botanical Garden in Tokyo, then its offspring was brought to Nagoya in 2011 to celebrate the Nobel Prizes of two alumni, professor Makoto Kobayashi and professor Toshihide Maskaw. After the Newon’s tree bored the fruit for the first time in 2018, a 3D printed replication from a scanned data of the apple fruit was created in the technical center of School of Science, Nagoya University.
